Highlights from the Leadership Institute for Women of Color Attorneys, Inc. (LIWOCA) 2019 – 14th Annual Leadership Conference

ELS attorney Chandra C. Davis shared highlights from the LIWOCA Annual Conference held in Washington, DC March 27-29, 2019.

LIWOCA provides annual scholarships to women of color in law school. LIWOCA’s mission is to educate, mentor, inspire and network with women of color attorneys and businesswomen as well as create a forum for mentoring and networking. Chandra serves on LIWOCA’s Board and on the Annual Conference Planning Committee in addition to serving as Pipeline Project, Mentor and Instructor.

Featured speaker Hannah Lim-JohnsonSenior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer at Kelly Services addressed how women change the dynamic of business development, explaining it is ok to approach business development differently. In fact, the days of long lunches and golf outings are over. Business development is now all about developing strong relationships. Hannah assured the conference attendees that it is ok to pursue unique ways to develop a relationship.  She even prefers a trip to the grocery store to a ride in a golf cart. Chandra loves to spend time with clients, especially if it is driving through the aisles of H Mart!

Genine Lewis, a former mentee of Chandra and Halima White at McGuireWoods, LLP, provided best practice highlights for outside counsel to consider in working with corporate law departments.

Chandra coordinated a panel discussion on the importance of Emotional Intelligence in reaching beyond the glass ceiling. Kelley ParkExecutive Vice President, Human Resources at Southwire Company, LLC stressed relating to others is vital in today’s workplace.

Conference Bonus – Important Opportunity to Network and Connect

LIWOCA’s insightful conference format included Friday afternoon activities. Several engaging opportunities were available and provided a great time to network and develop a support system. Chandra enjoyed a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum is phenomenal, it takes a full day to experience it!
